An EASY Step-By-Step Guide to Start Meditating

Just start. That’s basically it, have a great week!
Just kidding…it’s a little more complex than that. But essentially that is the first step in learning how to meditate; starting. And really coming to the point where you are willing to do this for yourself. I find for me it was hard to get into meditation because I hated sitting still with myself for longer than a minute. If I was by myself in my own thoughts, I’d just go on my phone. If I was uncomfy or tired, I’d isolate or again get on my phone. I wasn’t aware how disconnected from myself I was. If you are reading this and it makes you uncomfy or you can relate, this is your sign to start on this journey.
After you’ve gotten out of your own way and realize this is something you need to do for yourself, you’re finally on to the next step! Researching and finding what works for you is step two. Thankfully at the time I got into meditation, I had a mentor who suggested what she does for meditation and told me to start there. It was recommended to check out Transcendental Meditation and to go to the center in LA to be properly taught by a teacher to learn. So that’s exactly what I did. Despite my financial fear at the time (three months into the pandemic), I went ahead and scheduled my classes. For TM, you have to be taught by a teacher because they give you a mantra and this is what you use to meditate. When I learned how to sit still for 20 minutes twice a day, it was a really hard transition at first. I hated my own thoughts and I didn’t like myself very much. So sitting quietly just observing my head, my body and my emotions was annoying and scary.
But this brought me to step three, endurance. Keeping up with the practice becomes the second hardest thing in the journey. I travel, I’m very busy and because as a creative not having a set schedule, freaked me out in the beginning. “How am I going to keep up with this?!”, is what I thought to myself. When I tell you though, those first few meditations in class with everyone and then just doing it for the next few weeks after, the immediate effects I felt from the meditation actually made me CRAVE it. It was like my body enticed me into liking meditation and wanting to go back because of how good I felt spiritually, emotionally, mentally and physically. So if you are nervous of keeping up with the longevity of your practice, my advice is don’t worry about it! You would be surprised how your body can respond to you when you prioritize and take care of it.
The last step of the practice is to keep going and be open minded (in my opinion). If you don’t want to pay for TM classes, start with Youtube guided meditations, ask people who are already on their journey what works for them, I mean there are SO many options waiting for you! Don’t worry about the long-run or doing it “perfect”. Just show up, try it out and keep going. Be open minded to adding new things in or phasing out one thing for another. We are all evolving and showing up again is the most important step in the journey.
